Diversity is a subject that has brought much education to America and is accepted nearly everywhere today. In early colonization, however, diversity was something to be purged. Many prejudiced beliefs separated the colonists and their colonies by race, religion, and even sexes. Political power was singled out to those who had the correct genes, but not necessarily the right mind. Many avoidable, but devastating mistakes were made. Although some people still believe that the culture clashes were the Indians or the European's fault, the fault belonged to all involved. These cultural clashes were the result of several centuries of prejudiced criticism due to self-image, religious beliefs and views about land ownership.

Self-image was an important factor in the culture clashes of early America. The Native Americans, for the most part, saw themselves as innocent victims. According to Wahunsonacock, Powhatan Confederacy, the Indians were unarmed and harmless, and freely willing to give whatever the European


The colonist's views on land ownership confused the Indians. The European's had a pressing need for ownership; nobody else could share it unless they said so. The Indians had territories, a vague sort of tribal hunting ground where they would live. Since the Indians never really "bought" the land, the Europeans figured that they could sign a few contracts and that the land would be theirs, by right. They justified their actions by stating that they met the Indians in their own market and paid the price the Indians wanted. But for what price can someone's heritage be sold? The Indians were uneducated in the value of land; their concept of ownership was completely different. The Indians would probably have never sold the land if they knew that they would be forced to live on reservations. But then again the land probably would have been taken by force from the prejudiced European's.
