In Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken", the central theme is about choices. More than that, it is about choices that are not made and questioning ourselves later in life. The title of this poem gives us insight to and reflects this theme.
We learn in the first lines of the poem that the narrator must choose between two roads he finds equally appealing:
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
It is obvious the narrator has a difficult choice to make and he is cautiously considering his options. The fact that he is sorry he could not travel both roads foreshadows the regret he will have later in life. The narrator goes on to say that neither road has been traveled more th
"Though as for that the passing there
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
His decision is made with the knowledge that there is no right road; there only exists the road he chooses and the one he does not. His choice becomes the road taken and the choice he does not make becomes "The Road Not Taken".
