Christmas lights, to some, are a way of looking at and showing spirit towards the holiday season. Throughout the world, people from different ethnic groups each have a way of showing their Christmas character. Americans have lighted their houses and towns by using a practical invention; where as English settlers, during the 1800s, used candles and ribbons to amplify their beliefs. Today Christmas lights are seen as a necessity but long ago they were rare and expensive.

Christmas lights were not always something seen around during this time of celebration. In 1879 Thomas Edison, an American, created a type of electrical current which heated, lit homes, and provided better living conditions. One of Edison's businesses associates names Edward Johnson took the idea of a light bulb and created a safe and shimmering evergreen. Johnson hand wired 80 red, white and blue bulbs and wound them around a rotating tree. At this time, this was nothing remarkable to the public. When colored lights were affordable and widespread people began to use them for a variety of assorted needs and reasons.
