David Crockett
David Crockett was born in Green County, Tennessee near the mouth of Limestone Creek on the Nolichucky River (Hause, Early Life page). John and Rebecca Crockett's son was born on August seventeenth 1786. David's grandparents were killed by the Creek and Chickamuga Indians before he was born. His uncle James Crockett was held captive by the same Indians until David's father found him and was forced to purchase him back (Early Life page). David's father purchased several different plots of land while David was growing up. Buying land was an easy way to erase debt apparently (Shackford, page 6). You could hold on to it until the value was raised, cut and sale lumber or charge people to hunt on the land. John Crockett purchased a plot of land right down the road from Carson Newman College. Almost three hundred acres bordering Mossy Creek on the edge of Jefferson County were purchased for fifty shillings per hundred acres. The land was owned by the Crockett family until 1794 (6). David started school around the age of thirteen. He had not been there to long before he got into a fight with bully. After school David ambushes the bully and gets into another fight that the teacher had to brake up again. David skipped school
After this last term was up, David would never hold political office again. He tried for reelection but was unsuccessful. Jackson made sure of that by paying up to twenty five dollars a vote for Davis Frames Huntsman (Birth of a Legend). The defeat was almost a relief for David. He was tired of having to live up to his own name. Realizing his political career had come to an end he decides to pack up and head to a new land (Birth of a Legend). David had to fend for himself for the next two years of his life. He worked odd jobs when he could. He traveled around the state a little bit. Trying to live of the land was harder than he thought. David's family owned some taverns close to the homestead, so David headed for them. His stay in the taverns was short lived before his sister noticed him and told her parents. David was reunited with his family for the first time in two years. After a tearful reunion, David promises to never leave home again (Early Life). Once again David meets a man with political aspirations for him. Matthew St. Clair Clarke tells David that the Whig party would like back him for the up and coming election and publish a book of his adventures as a politician and outdoorsman (Hause, Birth of a Legend). David is elected to the Twenty Third Congress and The life and adventures of colonel David Crockett of West Tennessee is published (Birth of a Legend). David is presented with a rifle in Philadelphia that he names "Pretty Betsey." David's man reason for election to was to oppose Andrew Jackson and all of his political opinions that the Whigs did not agree with. David's life was a well documented one. A local high school is named after him in Jonesborough. There were seven silent films made about David Crockett. At least ten regular film features were also made. Six Disney film features were aired over the years (Hause, Sources). The most famous movie to the story of David Crockett was The Alamo where he was played by The Duke himself John Wayne. There is another full length movie being made in the near future. The role has not been cast yet though. It would be safe to say it can't be anyone more famous than The Duke. The first attack took place on February the twenty fifth.
