Death Penalty Against

A detailed Summary of Death Penalty Against

The human life is the most valuable resource on this planet. I ask why we must continue the chain of hate with legalized murder. We must accept the fact that there are people on this earth that live amongst us that do not value their own lives. This is a horrible thought; everyone should love themselves and believe in his or her self worth. This is something very difficult to do when your governing body is throwing away lives like they are worthless. It is the government's job to protect us from cold blooded murders, but no one said anything about having to kill them. These horrible people are safely behind bars doing their life sentences where they can do no one any harm. In Edward I. Koch's essay "Death and Justice: How Capital Punishment Affirms Life" he takes the commonly heard arguments and responds to them. The problem with this is he fails to make his argument on many key issues having to do with the death penalty.

There is no perfect way to kill a person. This is something that Edward I. Koch admits to in his essay. The reason for this is because human beings were not created to kill each other. They weren't meant to die by each other's hand. Why do we feel that i

A point that Koch does not even touch upon is the cost. It is far more expensive to go through the process of capital punishment then a life sentence is. In order to go through with the death penalty the accused must have a fair trial which in itself is hard to achieve. It is a proven fact that rich people get the death penalty far less often the poor. Reasons being that the rich can afford private lawyers that are being paid well to do their jobs. The poor receive appointed lawyers that are frequently under paid and inexperienced with pressures of a murder trial. After the trial a typical person will spend an average of ten years on death row. During this time they will get several chances at appealing their sentence. This not only ties up the court system but costs tax payers large amounts of money. If the convicted had received life with no parole he would only get a chance at appeal only if new evidence has arisen to prove their innocence. Lastly there is the actual punishment itself. In order for it to be done correctly it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. This seems to be a lot of money to be spending on seeking retribution and revenge.

As a practicing Catholic I know what my beliefs are and what the beliefs of my church are. A murder is when someone has killed another human being whether or not it is the government has approved of it or not. The Bible was written in a time where life was not valued as highly as it is today. I would like to sa
