The Hobbit

The hobbit Bilbo Baggins in the book, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, starts out as a timid, little, hobbit that has no sense of adventure whatsoever. His two family backgrounds, the Baggins side and the Took side conflict with each other; one is fearful and one yearns for adventure. These two sides are shown by his actions, and finally the fearful side begins to diminish. Bilbo Baggins gradually turns into an expert burglar and hero because of finding the invisibility ring, stealing from Smaug the dragon, and giving the Arkenstone to Bard.

When Bilbo is in the tunnels of the Goblins, he finds an invisibility ring. The ring belongs to the creature that lives in the deep lake of the cave. This creature is Gollum, and it is a very dangerous creature that may choose to eat anything it comes across. Bilbo is knocked out when he hits his head on a rock in a battle with the goblins. He ends up on Gollum's island and finds the ring there. Bilbo must answer riddles to try and escape Gollum. Gollum gets angry with one of Bilbo's riddles and tries to hunt down Bilbo and eat him. With his new courageous self-image, once quaint Bilbo Baggins finds himself in the lair of the dragon, Smaug, and stealing from it! Once the dwarfs find the secret entrance into the mountain, Bilbo descends into the depths of the mountain, and closer to the dragon. While Smaug is sleeping, on top of the treasure of the dwarfs, Bilbo sneaks over and grabs a cup from the pile of loot. This brave act is very celebrated by his counterparts, until Smaug awakes and notices the cup missing. This enrages him and he goes on a rampage. The dwarfs blame the hobbit for awakening the dragon and Bilbo proclaims in his defense, "What else do you suppose a burglar is to do? I was not engaged to kill dragons, that is a warrior's work, but to steal treasure. I made the best beginning I could. Did you expect me to trot back with the whole hoard of Thror in my back? If there is any grumbling to be done, I think I might have a say. You ought to have brought five hundred burglars, not one. I am sure it reflects great credit on your grandfather, but you cannot pretend that you ever made the vast extent of his wealth clear to me. I should want hundreds of years to bring it all up, if I was fifty times as big, and Smaug as tame as a rabbit." The dwarfs asked for their pardon after that. This event shows that Bilbo isn't as timid or sca
