Anxiety of Influence exhibited In A Clockwork Orange
A detailed Summary of Anxiety of Influence exhibited In A Clockwork Orange
Teenage rebellion is concept I am well aquatinted with at the age of sixteen. What is the cause of this desire to free thyself from the grasp of paternal control and the society norm? It is a natural human tendency to commit to the destruction of influence and give birth to natural original thought, or at least to try. Sometimes authors try to destroy their influence so they may establish their own immortality, to compose a more grand and original compilation. What happens when this great work rises into a immortal fame? It cast a cold shadow on the dying works of the past, stealing their grandeur. This need to kill the predecessor and establish oneself has been deemed the "anxiety of influence". If escaping the influence of the forefathers to establish oneself is a natural human inclination then it must be exhibited in writing. It must seep out of the subconscious onto paper in the things that we write. Therefore one should be able to pick up almost any novel and find this violence lurking between the lines.
The novel selected is A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. The reader may be aware that this story has also been told in the form of a movie. There are two reasons why the novel has been selected. Some of the theme was

lost in the movie and the last chapter of the book was excluded. The last chapter of the book was excluded from the movie because the last chapter of the book was not in the original American print of the novel. The reason as to why the last chapter was not included it the original publication will be explored at a more appropriate time in this paper.
