The Greater Right
A detailed Summary of The Greater Right
Abortion has, and will continue to be a constant debate of right and wrong. The moral and social aspects of the issue have been in conflict since the 1950's. The conflict of the rights of the women compared to the rights of the child cannot easily be solved due to the complexity of the issue. Many have argued that a woman should have complete control over her own body. The conflict with this is that many believe that the woman's morals may not be present in her decision. The other side of the argument is based on the rights of the child. Most people on this side believe that the child's life should be treated like everyone else's. This means that if the life is taken, the taker should be considered a murderer. Abortion should be allowed, as long as it is not abused and used as a birth control.
Female bodies are designed to bear offspring, unless disrupted by physical malfunction or human intervention (Podell). However, women have been attempting to control this function since the 1950's (Podell). The trust in their relationship was lost, and the event is still help over her head to this day. Her supposed 'friends' turned their back on her due to their religious affiliations, and their lost trust in her. Some people have made up their minds about which side they wish to be associated with, but then change after a personal experience. For example, an interviewee believed that under no circumstances should an abortion be performed (Anonymous). Upon receiving information that she was pregnant, she began to consider an abortion (Anonymous). She was forced to think of all the repercussions of her decision. She knew that her Catholic church, her parents, and some 'friends' would disown her (Anonymous). The child would be born unto an unwed, teenage couple with fewer opportunities then the average child. She had to consider that her life would have to be put on hold for an undefined time while she raised the child and the father worked. With her dreams of the future and the child's interest in mind, she decided to have the abortion (Anonymous). This choice may have spared her immediate future, but she had no idea of the effect it would have on her relationship with those around her.
The antiabortionists' side can be summed up with: God-given rights, as in life, cannot be taken away (Podell).
The anti-abortion side views the issue as a simple murder. In reality, the situation is often more complex then that. Antiabortion
