A detailed Summary of The Hurricane


In the movie "The Hurricane", the main character, Rueben Carter, strongly valued survival. Two scenes in particular clearly displayed Rueben possessing this value.

In the first scene, Rueben Carter is being locked up in prison to serve a life sentence for a murder he did not commit. He had literally fought his way up the social ladder from a poor African American family to the world of a famous prizefighter only then to be framed for a murder with which he was not involved. Reuben understood within himself the only way to survive his life sentence was to retain his personal beliefs; not to conform to the prison rules which represented to him the injustice and authority of the white man. In this first scene, the warden asked Rueben routinely to strip and put on the regulation prison uniform. Rueben was clothed in a very expensive suit and refused to change into the prison clothing. He told the warden he could not do it, that he would not wear the clothes of a guilty man. He told the warden


The two scenes described in this essay clearly showed that Rueben Carter is a man who values survival. Not only did he know within himself what it takes to survive, more importantly he did survive.

Also, while in the hole, Rueben would have conversations with himself portraying two different sides of his character. One was a younger naive black youth he once was, and the other was The Hurricane who was the successful prizefighter. In these conversations, the Hurricane would display dominance over the scared black youth. The Hurricane would tell the boy that he was running the show and told the youth that nobody was going to touch him or put their hands on him. Reuben, when responding as the black youth, would always say that he was scared and afraid. As the Hurricane, he showed dominance and faith that he would prevail.
