Turkey Stearns and The Detroit Stars

A detailed Summary of Turkey Stearns and The Detroit Stars

After reading the book Turkey Sterns and the Detroit Stars I realized that the book didn't just talk about the Negro League of Baseball, but yet a wide range of subjects. The author of the book, Richard Bak touched on subjects such as segregation, the history of blackball, Black baseball heros, as well as racism that occurred. With a wide range of subjects that were thouched upon by the author it was hard to figure out just what his thesis was within this book, if he even had one. I do however believe that if he were to have a thesis or a main subject it would be the fact that blackball players were no less skilled than the whiteball players that were in the majors, but their chance to make it there would not be a easy one. He continues to show that the only thing that kept Blacks from proving themselves in the majors was skin color. Had it not been for the color of their skin famous blackball players like Gosh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Turkey Sternes, James "Cool Poppa" Bell and perhaps one of the greatest blackball players Andrew "Rube" Foster would have dominated the majors. If only given the chance.

In the book there were many things that stuck out to me which helped support the fact that author Bak believed that many of

These are the things that Richard Bak helps you realize when reading the book. He wasnts people to bet the notion out of their head that Blacks were not good enough to be apart of the majors along with Whites though all of his stats may not be 100% accurate, but he gets rid of the notion that there is no evidence which shows that Blacks have or had the proper skill to play on the same field as Whites. Not only did he point out the fact that Blacks were just as skilled as Whites when it came to the game of baseball, but also they were able to manage teams just as well in their own league. Though there were a couple of times when the leagues failed to stay alive, I believe that it wasn't due to the fact that Blacks were not able to run the league. It was for the fact that do to racism and segregation the teams just were not able to capitalize finacially as the majors were. Richard Bak shows this numerous of times by showing how Rube Foster produced a league over and over again, but was not able to maintain it do to financial circumstances.

Overall it is a very informative book that not only shows you what went on within the inside of the Negro Leagues, but also the factors that Black
