Humphrey Bogart

Humphrey Bogart was one to always push himself to the limit, and would expect the best of him at all tasks. Bogart never lowered his standards to less then one-hundred percent. Bogart once told his best friend "I believe in being direct, simple, and honest." Bogart's attitude towards his work and his peers made people enjoy who he was, and some were puzzled about who he was.

On January 23, 1899 Dr. Defrost Bogart and Maude Bogart gave birth to Humphrey Defrost Bogart. Humphrey had two younger sisters. During Humphrey's childhood, he lived in a prominent section in New York and had a seasonal retreat in Canandaigua Lake. Dr. Bogart taught his only son how to play chess and how to sail. Humphrey would continue to sail and play chess the rest of his life.

Dr. Defrost Bogart was a prominent surgeon in Manhattan, and Maude Bogart was a successful illustrator.

Acting as a hero to a once loved and helping someone that is in trouble with other countries shows dignity.

Rick Blaine portrays indications of being cynical. During the movie Blaine is cautious in whom he allows to enter his casino, especially the Germans. Another example of Blaine's being cynical is captured when Ugarte is interrupted by police officers and becomes arrested for hiding the letters of transit. During this event Blaine yells "I stick my neck out for no one".

In conclusion, Rick Blaine shows indications of being cynical, patriotic, heroic, sentimental, and generous.

Finally, Rick exhibits generosity. Rick has a period in which his bar is shut down, due to problems with the Germans. During this time the generous side of Blaire shows when he tells an employee that for two weeks employees will still get fully paid. Another example of his generosity is during the period of getting the transit letters to Laslo. He allowed Laslo to flee the country with Ilsa and have the letters of transit which in return gave them freedom.

Beginning the start of Bogart's career, it became a disaster. In his first thr
