1984
In 1948, Eric Arthur Blair, better known as George Orwell, wrote a book called Ninety Eighty-Four. With chilling insights into the future, this book reveals a totalitarian society in the year 1984. In this world, people are ruled under "The Party". At the head of this government is a fictional figure known as "Big Brother", an omniscient leader who can only be seen on "telescreens," but never in real life, watches the people of this nation, Oceania, every minute of every day. Though this book was written in the year 1948, it tells much the same what was happened in China during the Cultural Revolution that took place almost 2 decades later. Red China Blues, based on Jan Wong's chronicle of her experience during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, gives us a complete explanation how such a totalitarian society operated in real life. After the failure of the Great Leap Forward, an unrealistic goal that to turn China into the world's super power, many people were dead in Starving. "By 1959 the economy had been crippled by the follies of the Great Leap, the people were exhausted and demoralized, and starvation stalked the land. Economists estimate that the Great Leap caused a lo
The right to pursuit of happiness was undoubtedly denied under totalitarianism. The abomination of sex for pleasure, and falling in love with someone are both examples of denial of pursuit of happiness. The Party makes sex out to be a dirty and disgusting act, makes people think the less the better. They even create a Junior Anti-Sex League to teach children the sin in sex, and make them from desiring it. Such kind activities also took place in China. "From 1967 to 1972, after Mao no longer needed their stormtrooper service, ten million teenagers, clumsily dubbed going-up-to-the-mountains-and-down-to-the-countryside intellectual youth, were abruptly sent into rural China (Pg 64, Red China Blues)." To what the CCP wanted people to believe, by hard working and living in a harsh condition it could purify one's spirit. However, it was also a way to maximize the usefulness of the tools. When Jan and Erica tried to celebrate Wang's birthday, she refused or was even frightened. "No! No! Wang shouted in her terrible English, recoiling as if we had given her a copy of Richard Nixon's quotations. Bad! Bad! She cried."(Pg 52, Red China Blues). To what they think, "A party member must be modest!" l The Twentieth Century a brief global history GOFF / MOSS / TERRY / UPSHUR sixth edition The life of a person living in a totalitarian society was strictly controlled. As it is described in Ninety Eighty-Four, a person does not choose what they do for a living, or what they want to. The Party is the center of everybody's life, and will make decisions for everyone. The only reason for people to getting married is to produce children that will work for the Party. The main Character, Winston, he divorced because his wife couldn't produce the baby the Party expects, and wouldn't consider sex for any other purpose because desire is thoughtcrime. He is drawn to Julia because she is "corrupt," which means she enjoys sex and has previously taken several lovers. Same thing happened in China, most Chinese earned little freedom, their thought, their jobs, even their futures were limited. Scarlet, Jan's roommate during her year studying in Beijing wanted to study science but central-planning czars put her in history. "You have to study what you are told," She said. Under such society, people no longer lived for themselves, but only for the government. Personal value never existed; everybody became a tool for the party, except those who lead. Liberty can be defined as exemption from control of another, freedom from external restraint and the power of choice. All of these definitions defy the very bas
