Gatsby's dream was to recreate the past with his first love, a rich girl named Daisy. He pursued this dream for five years and planned to live happily ever after with Daisy and give her the finer things in life. However, this dream could never eventuate. A major reason for the collapse of Gatsby's dream was because Gatsby could never admit to himself that his dream was going to fail. In his mind, his dream was so straightforward and achievable and he set himself up for failure by ignoring the many problems that were always going to be in his way.

While Gatsby's dream included Daisy in it, it is a very different Daisy to the real one. Because he has not spoken to her in five years, he has built her up inside his head and she is now his idea of perfection. Not only does he see her as the perfect woman, but he also sees her as the completion of him - therefore making him whole and perfect. Throughout the novel, we see Gatsby still chasing his dream and Daisy.

His dream was so simple and clear-cut in his mind that he set himself up for failure by looking past the underlying factors that would not allow his dream to be fulfilled.
