Hero's in english

The definition of a hero to me is a legend, a man, god like, often of great heritage, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods. In looking at the stories of Gilgamesh, the Old Testament and Joseph, and the Odyssey and Odysseus they all fall into this definition of a hero.

In Gilgamesh not only did the Gods favor him but also they created him. In fitting with the definition the god of storm Adad "endowed him with great courage" (pg.19). The strength that he hold in unmatched " a goddess made him, strong as a savage bull, none can withstand his arms" (pg.19). Gilgamesh was a legend, but for the reason that he was created by the gods. In the definition of a hero it says often of great heritage but I wouldn't put Gilgamesh in this area because heritage is your background and Gilgamesh did not really have one. Also a hero wouldn't be a hero without some battles and victories under his belt. In having battled in war and so forth people do remember the achievements of a hero, who one has killed, etc. And when Gilgamesh goes talks to Siduri she asks him " If you are Gilgamesh who seized and killed the Bull of Heaven, who killed the watchman of the cedar

In all these 3 stories heroes were created as Gilgamesh was, made as Joseph made himself one, and just pure as Odysseus was the great one. They all have the qualities that a hero needs, and they also have the downside that every hero goes through. Yes these men are heroes but not all heroes live the life of a hero. Just look at the beginning life of Joseph and the life of Odysseus.

In the story of Joseph a hero is probably a little too big of a word to give him. He didn't come from great heritage; he was not really strong, but he did have courage, and bold exploits, and yes the gods favored him. In everything that Joseph went through the god was watching over him. But I would say that what Joseph did made him a hero. When the famine was going to come Joseph made everyone aware of what was about to happen; now with all the things that he went through he didn't have to but he did anyway. With all the hatred that Joseph was show by everyone except his father you would think that he wouldn't do the right thing but he did and that makes him noble and a hero. Joseph learned to forgive and forget "For god said he, hath made me forget my toil, and all my fathers house, for god hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction." (pg.66). A man that has so much power can do injustice to those whom have hurt him before but he doesn't he knows what he is there to do and he knows what god wants from him. So in Joseph case, yes, he was a hero but not the type that went out and fought the "enemy". He was a hero for his actions and for the type of person that he was.

In the Odyssey there was a hero and his name was Odysseus. Even when book II in the story begins, it starts
