The population of the developing sub-Saharan Africa is currently 620 million and is projected to double by 2025, even when taking into account the rising deaths from the Aids virus. Africa -meaning sunny without cold -is the second largest continent and is almost split equally in two by the equator. Its northern part has the Sahara desert and two mountainous regions. The southern part is rich in resources such as gems and fossil fuels. This richness is matched by an intensely lush rain forest that is home to world famous wildlife. Africa is also home to widespread poverty and deadly illnesses, such as the Aids virus, malaria and malnutrition, which affect millions of people. Because of Africa's large size its population density is still below the world's average. Fresh water which is essential for good health and farm production is increasingly scarce in Africa. Currently, 505 million people face water scarcity. By 2025, it is predicted that sixty percent of Africans will live in countries that lack adequate water supplies. Imagine living without water. Forest coverage and arable land is being greatly impacted by Africa's growing population. Africa lost one-fifth of its forest cover by the 1990, and it now loses thirty-eight thousand square kilometers of forest every year. That is roughly the size of Netherlands.
