Metamorphoses by Ovid
In Ovid's Metamorphoses he talks about the theme of transformation and change in all of his stories which he acquired from the Greek and Roman mythology. The two stories that most resemble transformation is the story of "Callisto" and "Semele and The Birth of Bacchus." In both these stories Ovid shows how Juno, a jealous goddess, transforms two young women for having cheated with her husband, Jove. Ovid writes vividly on how Jove continually cheats on Juno and the way she punishes his victims. Ovid illustrates the comparison and contrast through each story of transformation. Both stories, "Callisto" and "Semele and The Birth of Bacchus," are similar because Juno is a very envious goddess and punishes the victims of her husband, Jove. To show that she is of the higher power she tries to destroy their lives to make them pay for what they have done. Both cases are very similar because Juno wants one thing, revenge. She hates the fact that her husband, Jove, is always cheating on her and she cannot do anything to him because he is a god, so she takes her anger out on the mortals. Both stories are similar for the fact th
at Jove did cheat on his wife with both women. They also were pregnant by Jove which angered her a lot. Ovid explains clearly and writes brilliantly how Juno gets her vengeance on the ones she hates. The fates of the two young women were horrible due to the fact that Jove had cheated on his wife and the women had to pay for his wrong doings. Juno is always getting jealous and mad at the fact that her husband is always running away doing his thing with other women that she transforms them or they die. Juno wants the other women to know that if she finds her husband cheating on her with another woman she would make their lives terrible by transforming them. She wants to be known as a powerful goddess by making the women into animals where they are less than human beings. In Callisto story Juno transforms Callisto into a bear for being so attractive making Jove rape her. Juno is a very jealous goddess and knows that her husband Jove is always cheating on her. Although Callisto is the rape victim Juno doesn't care and feels as though she should be punished and turns her into a bear. Right before Callisto is transf
