In today's day and age, absolutely anything can happen, especially in the world of science. Earlier this year, scientists were able to create the first completely cloned healthy cat. This brought to many individuals shock and disbelief. Up until a few weeks ago, the extent of cloning only reached the boundaries of animal life, not human life. Now, however, after years of failed tests and numerous amounts of research, scientists have created the first cloned human embryo. The cloning of the human embryo is seen as a breakthrough in science because it offers other avenues of hope in breaking down the barriers that incurable diseases has brought to the medical community. Cloning should be made legal because it provides our world with a set of options and cures to problems that have not been previously available, primarily through stem cell research. Cloning is a highly publicized issue with many aspects of which most people are not aware. Many times people who are opposed to cloning do not fully understand what the three main types of cloning are and the potential benefits that could come through the world of science. Those dying of incurable diseases would be given an option of through the legalization of cloning which has not been previously available. The antidote to many diseases plaguing humanity that scientists have been searching for is right at their fingertips, yet to stand by and refuse to legalize cloning will eliminate the potentially numerous benefits. Patients who are afflicted by diabetes would suffer no longer. Through therapeutic cloning, scientists could develop insulin-secreting cells and transplant them to patients with diabetes (Robinson 3). A child dying from leukemia could receive an infusion of fresh bone marrow through cloned cells without undergoing the often lengthy search for a marrow donor match (Nash 2). Also, infertile couples would be given the chance to have the defect gene cloned and fixed, so that reproduction could yield the couple a child (Bryne 3). In the end, the legalization of cloning will bring forth many new possibilities to aid the lives of those suffering from incurable diseases. There are also those, mostly on the "religious right", who believe that the methods of cloning are not natural and are not a part of God's overall plan. Opponents of cloning feel that God did not intend for humans to be creating non-natural forms of human life (Kluger 2). However, cloning that uses embryos contains a female egg and sperm from a man (Caplan 5). Therefore, cloning does, indeed, use the very essence of life. Also, one can argue that God did not intend for cloning to be done, as such opposition was used to combat the use of invitro fertilization in producing children for those who are infertile (Caplan 5).
