Have you ever wondered why a baby cries or what a toddler's tantrum is about? Maybe you've observed a person grieving or someone laughing. One day, maybe even today, you heard someone discussing their plans for the weekend. Whatever you observed, it was one person communicating their thoughts, feelings, and/or ideas to others. There are so many means of communicating in this world that we live in. Sometimes, we communicate verbally but that is certainly not our only form of communication. Other times, we communicate through actions or maybe just through the expressions on our faces or our mannerisms. Sometimes communication is done through printed documents.

In studying both the case of the Boston photographs and of Texas v. Johnson, we see that oral communication is not the only means of communicating. Here, letters of disgust to the editors who allowed the printing of particular photographs and the burning of an American flag express the opinions of people. Also, the actual photographs were the journalist's means of communicating what he was a witness to on that dreadful day in Boston.
In other cases, the reactions to one person's expression are not as kind as a letter to the editor. Sometimes, the person initially expressing his idea may be shunned greatly, tortured by others, or- as in the court case of Texas v. Johnson- one may be arrested and possibly fined for his actions.
