Whatever said by prachi in favour of faceted schemes of classification I totally disagree with her points. I strongly advocate use of enumerative classification in current context. Enumerative classification is good enough to handle the complexities of modern era. UDC itself is nothing but an extent ion of DDC with several complexities. Then why to use UDC?

UDC has constantly being criticized for some of the demerits, which are:

There are internal contradictions and vague nesses in its schedules.

It consists of a collection of specialized classifications, which do not form a unified system.

Very often it is unscientific in its methods at practical level.

The principles underlying UDC have not been described explicitly; as a result many decisions taken by classifiers are subjective in nature.

Apart from that the fact is that DDC is being used by maximum number of organizations, be it any media, which itself is a clear evidence of its popularity and usefulness. Had the faceted schemes been so useful why they are not being used.

For evaluating any species of classification some normative principles should be used. Ranganathan's canons for classifications are

1.Ease of classification: as an enumerative scheme for classification consists essentially of a single schedule enumerating all subjects of the past, the present and the anticipatable future so the readymade class numbers and the simple methods of constructing class number makes it easy for classifier to assign a class number to a particular document. As the methods used in constructing class number and notations used in DDC is simple enough when compared to UDC or any other faceted scheme, the use of DDC is preferred.

6. Suitability for end users: - Information is classified for the end users. It is always easy to retrieve documents if it is classified according to an enumerative classification scheme like DDC. So if the documents can be retrieve successfully using DDC which has a mental appeal to the end user there is no need of using UDC or any other faceted scheme.

This also fulfills the 2nd and 3rd laws of library science which are "Every user his/her information" and "Every information its user" respectively.

5. Read, write and remember: - Class number in an enumerative scheme consists of simple digits, which give ease of read, write and remember. For example it is always easy to read, type or pronounciate 020.51 rather than 2; 51'N78 or 061.2(100)::002 FID.
