Heathcliff can not be with Catherine now that she has past; and the thought of this drives him to the brink of insanity and closer to his own death which he awaits with out fear. He even goes as far as claiming to see Catherine at the dinner table and questions Nelly if they are alone in the room "Turn round, and tell me, are we by ourselves?" (Bronte, pg 314) Heathcliff thinks that he sees another person, another person who he believes to be his true love, Catherine. Heathcliff however, still pines for Catherine with all his mind body and soul. He misses her so much in fact he begins preparations for his own death "Last night, I was on the threshold of hell. Today, I am within sight of my heaven. I have my eyes on it, hardly three feet to sever me!" (Bronte, pg 311) Heathcliff is so miserable in his life without Catherine, that he is killing himself; he will not eat anything Nelly prepares for him and starves himself to death.
