The Sound of Waves
In a novel, the setting of the story is used as a unifying device. The Sound of Waves, by Yukio Mishima, is no exception. The author uses the setting to develop the novel, and tie it together. He makes many references to the sea and the sound of the waves. Mishima uses this setting to show how it incorporates into the daily life of the inhabitants, and shows how the sound of the waves change for the best, and the worst, depending on the tone of the story. Since the residents of the island live around the sea, and the island is so small, the sea plays a large role in their daily lives. One may think that Shinji would want to go out and explore the world, and get away from the sea. However, he learns to accept this as his home and living. " His fisherman's conception of the sea was close to that of the farmer for his land. The sea was the place where he learned his living..." pg 19. The sea also plays a large role in family life. The men of the family make a living by fishing, and work with the cargo ships. Since Shinji does not have a father, he has
to work by the sea. His mother also takes the setting to her advantage, and dives to earn money for the family. Lastly, you can see that they believe that the sea is an important part of their life because they pray to the god of the sea to keep them safe. Before Shinji and his mother make a trip out to sea, they pray to the god to keep them safe and protect them. All of the villagers incorporate the sea into their everyday life. The sound of the waves can also be negative. When the mood is eerie or restless, the sound of the waves is fierce and not calm. When Hiroshi and his friends enter the cave, "the sound of the surging waves was completely different from that to which they were accustomed to outside." Pg 98. The cave is mysterious and unknown to them, and so is the sound of the waves. Another incident where the sound of the waves shows negativity is right before Yasuo's encounter with Hatsu. " In the dead of the night the sound of the waves could be plainly heard, and the moon was shining brightly. The village was silent." Although it is sile
