Toy Story Or Lion King
How is it that you make a decision between two cartoons about which is better? Some say that you should judge them by which of the cartoons has the best plot, others say to decide on how well the characters relate to humans? I however did neither of these, I decided by the amount small details the artists put in to the film. I divided the details in to three different categories: background & foreground detail, character detail, and natural elements. The movie "The Lion King" had excellent backgrounds and foregrounds. At the beginning of the movie there is a brilliant sunrise, this sunrise showed an extremely high-quality background. It slowly transfers from a dark blue, through a variety of mauves & violets, to a bright sky blue. The artists also show amazing foreground details by showing every individual blade of grass on a fast running scene. The artists also achieve multiple layered sequences by having intense details on the front of the picture, at the beginning of a scene, and then slowly moving the detail to the back at the end of the scene (e.g. Simba and Nala are in the elephant graveyard, as they leave the artists soften detail on them and then focus detail on the uncle at the top of the screen. Before the artists did
Showing correct natural elements in a non-computed film would be difficult to capture. This shows in "The Lion King". The dust coming up from characters as they ran was not as accurate as it could have been. Also the water of the waterfall also seemed to be falling slower than it should. However, the artists did capture the wind blowing in the trees especially well. They also showed the way the fire flickers, and if you looked very closely it appeared to be real. Then there is "Toy Story", having the advantage of computers it did better in this category. They showed the natural characteristics of the plastics reflect ability by placing light glares on the rounded parts of faces and objects (when applicable). The slinky, on the dog Slink, has very accurate characteristics of a spring. When you see him walking, the spring coils & pulsates like a real spring should. The animators also capture the natural way mirrors and lenses work through Woody looking at himself through a spoon, and by changing the way Woody looked through a magnifying glass. They also showed a magnifying glasses property of concentrating light by burning a hole in Woody's head. Finally, by showing Woody and Buzz accelerate as they fall, you see the natural property of gravity. "The Lio
