Jane Eyre Interpretive Sketch

A detailed Summary of Jane Eyre Interpretive Sketch

Out of the entire book, I found the last third the most difficult to relate too. It wasn't so much that the situations didn't apply to me, but that they were pretty obscure. The Rivers' kindness towards strangers was the first thing that struck me as something I could relate too. Although the situations would probably be different from being in the city, to up at my cottage, id like to think that if someone were to come to my doorstep in need of assistance, I would do everything I could to help them. I can relate to Jane's feeling of physical exhaustion and defeat as she was begging, as I was once canoe tripping through Quetico Park, underfed and suffering from heat stroke. I can imagine how she would feel while wandering that day, as it must have been ten times worse then what I felt. I can also sympathize with why Jane would not want to marry St. John as she felt like she would just be settling for something although she didn't love him. I was recently put in a similar situation with a friend of mine, so I can understand her temptation. Jane is also very generous with her inheritance towards her cousins. They found it very sexist the way that the girls were taught different subjects in school. I hadn't even noticed it, which was surprising because that would generally be something that would bother me. Other members thought that St. John was very tricky and that what he did to Jane was very cruel as it put her in a tough position. The way I saw it, Jane had the upper hand and she was the one putting St. John in the awkward position. The other major difference was that I was the only group member that believed that the treatment of strangers at that time was better, then it is today. They were more accepting of the fact that these people existed, and while they were cold towards them, they at least acknowledged them and tried to help in someway, even if it was rude.
