What is an American??

As the American man walked down the street of Beijing, he noticed many American restaurants and stores, such as McDonald's and JC Penny's. He knew that China was becoming very modern, but the rate of Americanization startled him. Many of his Chinese friends were proud that their country was becoming more American, but he resented that. There was more to being American then just originating from the United States. To be American is a privilege that comes with a sense of freedom and pride. Only a true American would understand that.

The above paragraph describes the feelings of many patriotic Americans. Lately it seems that the definition of the word American has become very controversial. To some it merely means to be made in the U.S. Geographically speaking, American should refer to anything made in either North or South America, but to many the definition is much more abstract.

On September 11th, when the terrorists attacked our great nation, swarms of Americans rushed to ground zero to help out in any way that they could. The New York City Fire and Rescue Workers were truly the heroes of the day, along with the ordinary people who took the time to search for survivors and to aid the injured. That day will be the second day to live in infamy for it was the second time in history when America was struck on it's own soil with such devastation. The American patriotism and pride felt after the terrorist attacks are feelings that will forever embed themselves into the minds of those Americans who watched in horror as New York City began to crumble. Although the initial reaction was nothing but incredible shock and horror, our nation reached out to those in need with open arms, offering comp
