The Green Mile (book)
"He wore chains on his arms and across his water barrel of a chest; He wore legirons on his ankles and shuffled a chain between them that sounded like cascading coins as it ran down the lime-coloured corridor between the cells" You have just been introduced to the man who was convicted of raping and murdering two young girls, the man who was convicted to meet "Old Sparkey" on death row (The Green Mile), you have just met John Coffey. The Green Mile is Death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary, it holds such condemned killers like "Wild" Billy Wharton and the possessed Cajun Eduard Delacroix with his pet mouse. The new inmate, John Coffey, seems to strike an emotional chord with the head prison guard, Paul Edgecombe, an understanding character but an unfortunate victim of a urinary infection. The minute Coffey is introduced to his cell he seems to break down and on being asked if he had any questions he replied "Do you leave a light on after bedtime... Because I get a little scared in the dark sometimes, if it's a strange place". This worried, discouraged voice is of a convicted killer but Paul Edgecombe seems to think otherwise. When reading this I seemed to feel sorry for John Coffey b
The third and final instance, the major reason that Coffey is innocent is when Edgecombe decides to sneak Coffey out of prison. Paul Edgecombe was a good friend of the prison warden, Moores, whose wife was suffering from a brain tumour that was going to kill her. Paul Edgecombe feels immensely sorry for Mrs Moores and decides to get together with the other guards to discuss how to break Coffey out. In the prison John Coffey, not knowing anything, was approached by the guards "Coffey said a curious thing" "Sure I'd like a ride". This small statement seemed to ensure Edgecombe of Coffey's innocence and that he knew all along what was going on. On arriving at the warden's house Coffey could sense that there was something wrong and he was eager to help. On the way up to the house the warden stood at the door with a shotgun poised, after realising that Edgecombe was there he calmed down but then realising that Coffey was there he freaked out and was ready to shoot. After being told to calm down and told that Coffey was there to help the warden seemed to ease up and allow Coffey in. He was taken up to the room where Mrs Moores lay "I see it" He said "Closer he bent, and closer still. His broad smooth lips pressed against hers and forced them open. There was a soft whistling sound as he inhaled the air which lay deep within her lungs." After this the house started to tremble and various items fell off the walls. The next sequence in where John Coffey's secret is further revealed is when another inmate's, Eduard Delacroix, pet mouse, Mr Jingles, was busy a trick that his owner had taught him, showing off to all the guards. The trick involved throwing an old spool to the ground and the mouse chased after it and then wheeled
