In April of 1512, Selim I led the Janissaries to Istanbul where they poisoned Bayezid, his father, and executed Ahmad, his brother. Selim II was a noted womanizer and alcoholic. He spent most of his time in his harem. Selim II, came to be commonly known as "Selim the Drunk." He hid almost completely from the decision-making and administrative duties of his position as sultan. He had not been trained in government or military affairs; to prepare him to be Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Selim II reigned for only eight years. ("Selim II" Online)

During Selim II's reign, the Ottoman Empire was ruled by Sokolli, his Grand Vizier. Selim II had no interest in government affairs. Sokolli conquered Cyprus and Venice and recovered Tunis from Spain. He managed to bring peace to the empire after many years of conflicts during Selim I's reign. He had a peace treaty with Austria signed, which gave him stronger control over his European territories. But while Sokolli was in power, the Ottoman Empire received a very severe naval defeat by Christians at Lepanto in 1571. In 1574, Selim II died, and his son Murad III succeeded him.
