Thomas Hobbes the Great Cool Philosopher
In 1628 he published Thucydides' , partly to warn his countrymen about the dangers of democracy. His second trip was to France from 1629 to 1631, where he developed an interest in mathematics and thought he could apply mathematical methods to help the society on the way of civil war. On his third trip he met and was influenced by Galileo, Marin Mersenne, and Rene Descartes. When Hobbes made his third visit to the continent, which was from 1634 to 1637 and on which he was there with the young Earl of Devonshire, he is found his place among philosophers. At Paris, he was an intimate of Mersenne, who was the center of a scientific circle that included Descartes and Gassendi. After his return to England he wrote, with a view , a sketch of his new theory, to which he gave the title Elements of Law natural and politic. In November 1640, when the Long Parliament began to show signs of activity threatening civil war, Hobbes was the first of all that fled to France; he desricbed himself as a "man of feminine courage". He remained in France for the next 11 years. Later on , Hobbes was appointed to teach mathematics to Charles, Prince of Wales, who arrived in Paris in 1646. While in London he also wrote his most famous book Leviathan.
Hobbes was getting his point across by telling people that when push comes to shove that others will do anything to remain on top. Hobbes says that we also have to end war because until the state of war ends each person has the right to another person's life. Beside that motivation others that Hobbes stated: the fear of death the desire to an adequate living Unless we stop the state of was and qurlling among ourselves, people are going to try anything they can to do what they want with whom ever they want. With this in mind I entered the group discussion confused but having a sense of what he stood for. I really could argue either way for the topic on doctor George but after the first meeting and listening to others I found that Hobbes would have lead to believe that doctor George is good thing and could save peoples lives. Hobbes said that every thing has to be self-serving and the act of self-serving was the money that the program director was going to make. I still was not sure until I heard some of the other philosophers and what they thought on the topic. Half way through the first discussion I really thought that I could argue more in favor of the show then I could against it. This book should Hobbes views on all the theories and ethical decisions. It was published in 1651, the same year he moved back to England. He moved back because he felt safer now
