Renaissance..a time of change

The Renaissance was a time of change. It began in Italy during the 14th century, and spread throughout the North. People all over Europe were affected, for the better and for the worse. Some people finally had a chance to control their own fate. Others, like upper class women, lost their social status. The education initiated during the Renaissance has never ended since. The Renaissance was a rebirth of humanistic culture and an enhancement in education. The values and purposes of Renaissance education were to improve the society, increase the economy, and restore the religious beliefs.

Social lives were greatly influenced by advancements in education during the Renaissance. More people then ever before were sent to schools to become more educated individuals. At schools for young ladies, they were taught sewing, reading (to teach them good manners), writing (only examples of sober sentences, prudent and chaste were taken out of the holy scripture or the sayings of the philosophers), singing, music, and dancing. Consequently, women were somewhat ed


Courtiers were taught to appreciate and judge the writings of others, and were able to write poetry and text. In learning these things, the courtiers will never want for pleasant entertainment with the ladies, who are usually fond of such things, and even if his writings should not merit great praise, at least he will be capable of judging the writing of others. As a result of education, men were provided with the skills of good penmanship, riding, playing, dancing, singing, and dressing well. Men of high status gained respect and reputation. Nevertheless, the school system did not teach youth how to behave in daily life situations. All of the time of youth is spent in grammatical, rhetorical, and logical toys; those things which are real and fit to enlighten men's minds, and to prepare them for action, is being reserved for the universities. The study of philosophy and letters were not focused on. Therefore, students had a slight understanding of the meaning and the true use of knowledge.
