Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's biggest coral reefs in the world. It's so huge, at 2,000 km (1,200 miles) long, that it can be seen from the Moon! Its taken 18 million years for the Great Barrier Reef to get to the size it is today. The Reef consists of 2,900 (geocities.com) separate reefs it also has an area of around 344,000 kmē. North Queensland is known for its natural beauty.

The Great Barrier Reef is considered a great vacation spot. It's great for diving and snorkelling. There are many resorts all over small islands. It is quite easy to become engulfed in the whole reef experience. It's colourful, exotic, and strange sea life make the Great Barrier Reef very unique and special. The Great Barrier Reef is made up of accumulated skeletal remains of zillions of marine polyps from the Coelenterata family. New polyps continue to grow on the lime-based structure and are continually added to the reef. However, coral needs a n


Scientists are studying the Great Barrier Reef to learn more about it. Some of the possible remedies to prevent further damage are to control tourism and stop pollution. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's (GBRMPA) management of the Great Barrier Reef are protecting the reef from further damage by influencing the development affecting the coastline of the Reef, with its hundreds of islands and river catchments. Thanks largely to the accumulated knowledge of basic and strategic research, ranging from the Great Barrier Reef Expedition of 1928 to the present, applied scientists and managers now take much for granted about the nature and function of the Reef. Hopefully the society will realise what damage they are doing, and in doing so, just maybe they will understand how important the Great Barrier Reef is, and if kept treated in this condition, it won't be around for anyone to enjoy.
