During this period of time, the poorer working class had a hard life. A lot of people were unemployed and people who were employed had very little wages and poor working conditions. This explains why people did not obtain their dreams. Due to the loneness of the workers, they would go into town and spend all their money that they earned during the month on brothels and other things. They did this because they were lonely and had no real family. Stienbeck describe this perfectly in his novel.
"Guys like us, that work on ranchers, are the loneiest guys in the world. They got no family. They work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake, and the first thing you know they're poundin' their tails in some other ranch. They ain't got nothing to look ahead to.'
