Immigration
Immigration is to come into a country of which one is not a native for permanent residence. People that immigrate usually leave their native country to escape political power, persecution, war, or poor opportunities (Alternatives for the Americas 1). The government in the native country is usually responsible for people taking these actions. A history of the United States is in many ways a history of immigration. In the late 19th and early 20th century millions of people immigrated to the United States from European countries such as Ireland, Poland, Germany, Italy, and Russia to escape famine, political or religious persecution, and to pursue the promise of political and economic freedom in this country. When these immigrants came to this country they saw the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, send in New York harbor to welcome the stream of immigrants arriving on Ellis Island. At its base in the inscription reads: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless... I lift my lamp beside the golden door." Immigration has and continues to be, an important element of strength of the United States. It brings diversity in ideas an
d people. Many of the current immigrants come from non-European countries, such as, are from Cuba, Haiti, China, and Japan. These people are of Hispanic and Asian decent. A discussion of immigration problems is often seen as racist. Indeed, many oppose immigration on racial grounds. This is wrong. It is important to welcome all people and give them opportunities our forefathers and we had. However, immigration is in a crisis in the United States and our immigration policies need a major overhaul. To address the problems with immigration we must turn to our government. Government is the act or process of authoritative direction or control. The United States government is one of the biggest in the world. The United States government has many responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is immigration. There are agencies with responsibility for immigration for immigration. The three agencies are the Border Patrol, the Coast Guard, and the Immigration and Naturalization Services. Immigration and Naturalization Service for short is known as the INS. The Border Patrol and Coast Guard are headed by the INS but are often seen as another issue. These are the three most important government organizations pertaining to immigration issues. Recently these agencies have come under heighten scrutiny over September 11th the day that the World Trade Center Towers collapsed due to terrorist attacks. Terrorists flew planes into the towers on that day to destroy them. The terrorists were foreigners who came to the United States on visas provided by the INS. The terrorist when given the visas were known to have connections to Al Queda a terrorist organization. But still the INS gave the terrorist visas to enter the country temporarily. But on September 11th their visas were already expired some for over five years. The INS had not deported them. In fact, in a final unfortunate irony, one of the hijackers received a visa after September 11th. Since then the Border Patrol, Coast Guard, and INS have been a hot topic and a source of controversy. The views of many people, particularly former immigrants, are very different. These differences have lead to protests, riots, and even murders. Many laws that relate to immigration are believed to be unfair, outdated, and ridiculous. Many believe the Border Patrol, Coast Guard, and INS are not large enough, needing more funding, and do a poor job. Immigration in other countries has both similar and worse problems than the United States. Currently Pakistan, Colombia, Canada, and most of the European countries have major immigration problems. Serious refugee problems also abound in many African countries and the Middle East. Pakistan's problems are from the refugees from Afghanistan. A refugee is a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution. The Afghan people are refugees seeking to flee their home country to escape the fighting between the Taliban and the United States. Refugees are not an issue with the United States since there are no countries that border us with these problems, although some would argue that people fleeing from Cuba and Haiti should qualify as refugees. Not only does Pakistan have to deal with the refugees from Afghanistan but they also have to deal with normal immigration. They have one of the worst immigration problems in the world. Colombia has bad problems with immigration. They have almost no services at all. Also they are the biggest producers in the world of drugs. Drugs are a side effect and aspect of immigration. Drugs are also the result of having poor a Coast Guard and Border Patrol. Canada has bad immigration problems also. Canada has many of the same problems as the United States. Immigrants also see C
