A Child Called It

I read the story "A Child Called It". It takes place in a little city known as Daly City in California. Daly City was known as one of the good towns in California. The story begins by describing a young and happy family sort of like the "Brady Bunch" of the 1960s. It was a family of five, a Mom, Dad, and three sons, whose lives were fulfilled with love and care. In this story Dave, the oldest son is the main character along with his mother, Catherine. Dave is a young boy about my age who is abused by his mother. Dave gets very little food so he is very scrawny and wears ragged clothes. I believe that one important thing Dave did was no matter what his mom did to abuse him he never gives in. I think that if I were in his situation I would have given in because she did some really bad things to him but I also admire the fact that he didn't.

Dave and his family like I said before are like the "Brady Bunch" of the 1960s. They lived in a modest two-bedroom house in Daly City, California. Dave's father, Stephen Joseph, supported his family as a fireman, working in the heart of San Francisco. His mother, Catherine Roerva, glowed with love for her children. Her greatest asset was her determination. Catherine always had her hair

I thought that this book was great. It always kept me interested through the whole thing. It was very intense and the way it was written I could almost feel Dave's pain and sorrow. I enjoyed the parts where Dave got food and the beginning when he had a happy life. I disliked the parts when his mom beat him or abused him in some hideous way. It made me want to cry. I really enjoyed the book though because it made me realize all the things I take for granted. This story had many themes I believe that one was, No matter what happens never give up because there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

and nails done. She also would spend hours putting make-up on. She was a great mother and cook. Dave's relationship with his mom was always good although Dave always had the unfortunate luck of getting caught at mischief. Then about the year of 1973 Dave started to notice a drastic change in his mom. Dave had a feeling that it had something to do with his dad cause his mom was always trying to make him happy and nothing ever seemed to work. Sure enough he was right. His dad began not coming home and if he did it was real late and he was always drinking. So Catherine began not to get dressed in the morning and was always yelling at Dave. It only got worse from here. She began not to cook dinners and if she did she wouldn't allow Dave to eat. It was almost as if she was punishing Dave because of his
