Brutus
The play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is mainly based around the assassination of Julius Caesar. The character in charge of the assassination was the play's tragic hero, Marcus Brutus. Brutus was a highly respected figure in Rome. He was a loyal follower and devout friend to Caesar. This seems kind of ironic because why would someone murder one of his good friends. Marcus Brutus is a very complex character. In my paper, I will examine Brutus and attempt to gain a deeper understanding of his character. Before, you can understand the actions of Brutus you must take a closer look at his character. I believe that Brutus was overall, a good person. His involvement in the assassination was not out of hate or envy like so many of the other conspirators. He was very sincere and pure in most of actions. Brutus truly believed that the assassination of Julius Caesar was for the good of Rome. That is the only reason why he decided to join the conspirators. Brutus's part in the assassination was not out of envy or hate because all of the other conspirators wanted to kill Marc Antony as well. Brutus was the one who persuaded them not to. This is apparent in the line where Brutus says, " For Antony is but a limb of Caesar
Marcus Brutus also seems to be philosophical. His personal philosophies direct his thoughts and actions. This is obvious when he refuses to agree to the death of Marc Antony. He also allows Antony to speak at Caesar's funeral. This ended up being a grave mistake. By speaking last at the funeral, Antony was able to get the final word in and alter the crowd's beliefs. Before he spoke, the crowd believed in the conspirators' cause. Antony's passionate speech turned the citizens of Rome against the conspirators. I believe that letting Antony speak last at the funeral was one of Brutus's greatest mistakes but also his way of being honorable. Brutus finds Caesar's desire of pride disgusting, but he has his own problems with pride. He shows great pride when it comes to his family and his position in the Roman empire. Brutus is very easily flattered especially when it comes to his ancestry. Cassius and the rest of the conspirators take advantage of his weakness. In Act One, Scene Two, Cassius says "'Caesar?' Why should that name be sounded more than yours?" Cassius also talks about Lucius Junius Brutus, who founded the Roman republic. Though I thought that Brutus appeared to be an overall noble person. However, I always felt that Brutus seemed to be too noble and perfect. I got the impression that Brutus was always hiding something. It seemed like he would always disguise the true cause of his actions with a very noble cause like promoting the Roman republic. I feel that by being involved in the assassination was out of self-interest as well as promoting the Roman tradition of government. Brutus's rigid idealism
