At some point and time many people will own their own automobile. During the time that a person will own an automobile they will be required to do regular maintenance on that vehicle to maintain proper engine performance and prolong the life of that vehicle. Any automobile that has been driven 3,000 miles since its last oil change or if it has been three months since the last time the oil has been changed, then it is time for the oil and filter to be replaced. By going to a local auto parts store there will be someone to assist in getting the required amount of oil that will be needed in order to replace the old oil, and they will assist in obtaining the correct oil filter for the specific vehicle being worked on. Other necessary tools that will be required will include a standard wrench that will fit the drain plug, an oil pan, and an oil filter wrench.

After parts and tools are acquired you will need to prepare the vehicle to be worked on. The vehicle must be put up on a lift or on the ground supported by stands. The vehicle must be put into neutral and


Disposal of old motor oil is a major part of an oil change. Used motor oil must be disposed of in a designated used oil drum. Used oil drums can be found at the same auto parts store that the oil was purchased. It is against the law to dump used motor oil into the ground. The old oil filter must also be put into a used oil filter drum also found at a local auto parts store. It is safe to take the rags soiled by oil and dispose of them into the garbage.

NOTE: It is recommended that the vehicle has been turned off for more than one hour so that the oil is cooled down to prevent burns.
