The Hobbit

A detailed Summary of The Hobbit

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the wonderful novel The Hobbit in 1937 as a prequel to his famous fantasy trilogy The Lord of the Rings. The hero of this tale is Bilbo Baggins, a home-loving hobbit who joins thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, to recover their treasure which was stolen by Smaug, a horrible dragon. The dwarves want Bilbo to join their party as an expert burglar and as a lucky number. Against his nature, and to a degree his will, Bilbo sets off toward the Lonely Mountain where Smaug guards his stolen hoard. Along the way, between the beautiful Shire and the barren lands where Smaug reigns, Bilbo and the others need much more than just a lucky number to finally achieve their goal.

The third person narrator of the tale explains first how an unsuspecting Bilbo is first tricked into joining the party by Gandalf, the famous wizard. In fact, Gandalf proves to be one of the most important pieces of good luck for the troupe throughout their many adventures in their quest for the stolen treasure. He is able to turn up at the most advantageous of moments to save the day himself, or on occasi

Another instance of good luck for Bilbo and the others is when Bilbo finds the magic ring in the tunnels of the goblins. He is unaware at first that the ring is magical, but once he discovers its wonderful ability, he uses it numerous times for the good of all. For example, he could have never helped the dwarves escape the nasty spiders of Mirkwood forest without the ring. Bilbo would never have been able to scheme a safe exit from the palace of the woodelves without the lucky ring. His burgling at Smaug's lair would have definitely been more difficult without the ring. Bilbo would never have been able to deliver the Arkenstone of Thrain to Bard and the woodelves without the ring. Finally, without the ring, Bilbo himself might never have survived the great Battle of Five Armies that occurs at the end of the novel. Indeed, much of the course of the novel is changed by the discovery of this lucky, magical ring.
