For the most part many abusers do not have the coping mechanisms needed to deal with difficult or stressful situations; this is a small part of why the problem exists. Coping skills are learned and reinforced through practice. Abusers chances of relapse decrease, if they have some degree of coping skills.

I have gained an understanding of the relapse process and procedures that clinicians currently use to train abusers to prevent relapsing from occurring. My personal belief is if the abuser lacks coping skills, then returning to them to the environment from which the abusive behavior began will provide a greater chance for relapse to take place.
