The Client
At age eleven, standing up to the FBI or the Mafia would not only be scary but also dangerous. In John Grisham's novel, The Client, he portrays an eleven-year-old Mark to be tough and persuasive as he faces both of these daunting adversaries. John Grisham uses the David-Goliath effect to grab the readers' attention and hold onto it until the end. The story begins with a boy, Mark Sway and his younger brother, Ricky, going into the woods in Memphis, Tennessee, to smoke cigarettes. The delinquent act takes a turn for the worst when the boys witness a man trying to commit suicide. After attempting to stop the suicide several times, Mark is caught by the man and beaten up. He is tormented and told some information that would make his life more complicated by the minute. Little does he know that his anonymous 911 call to report the suicide will lead to legal troubles in his future. Mark fears for his own
Grisham successfully maintained the underdog theme throughout this novel and has used this style in other novels including The Rainmaker. I believe John Grisham's well-developed characters and unexpected plot twists held my interest and provided entertaining reading. I would recommend this book to a friend. Mark also had a very dangerous encounter with a member of the Mafia. As he was headed for a doughnut in the hospital cafeteria, Gronke, a Mafia thug entered the elevator and threatened him. " 'Listen to me, Mark Sway,' he growled. Something clicked in his right hand, and suddenly a shiny switchblade entered the picture. 'I don't know what Jerome Clifford told you, but if you repeat a single word of it to anyone, including your lawyer, I'll kill you.' "(Grisham 184).
