Lost In Yonkers

Aim: Keeping I mind that these characters are wounded human beings who are members of a dysfunctional family, discuss the meaning of the title Lost in Yonkers. Show how the title applies to three characters: Grandma, Bella, Louie, Eddie, Jay, and Arty.

Neil Simon must have chosen the title Lost in Yonkers for a reason. None of them were physically lost; they all knew where they were. So why did he choose this title? Let us remember that the family in the comic drama was a dysfunctional one. I believe that Neil Simon chose this title to show that the characters were lost mentally and emotionally. It's pretty obvious that every character in the play was confused and lost in some way. Great examples of this is Grandma Kurnitz, who was lost in her pain and hardship, Bella who was lost in between child hood and adult hood, and Louie who was lost in understand the difference between right and wrong.

Was Grandma Kurnitz, Bella, and Louie lost? Yes they were, but for different reasons. Grandma was lost within her emotional pain, Bella is lost in her desires, and Louie is lost in his actions. As you can see, Neil Simon appropriately chose the title Lost in Yonkers.

Louie is a very unique and different character. He is a very strong man, and knows the rules to survival because of what his mother taught him. But, no matter how strong he is, he is still lost. He lives a life of crime and murder. It seems that he's been committing felonies for so long that he doesn't know the difference between right and wrong anymore. He speaks about the importance of bravery and "moxie", yet, he himself seems to lacks those attributes. He ran away from his problems by committing larceny and jumping ship. How is that "moxie"? That isn't. There is no doubt that Louie is lost, but lost about what? I believe he's lost between the definition of right and wrong, as well as, the difference between
