Bilbo Baggins lives a very ordinary life in Bag-End, Underhill. After he receives a surprising visit from Gandalf the wizard, Bilbo unexpectedly leaves and is presumed dead. Although hobbits of the Shire believe Gandalf forces his journey, Bilbo follows his Took instincts and seeks adventure away from his predictable life. Bilbo's mother, Belladonna Took, passed genes down to Bilbo from her trouble-seeking side of the family. Most hobbits are very quiet and unsurprising, but once Bilbo is tempted to escape and on go a quest, he cannot resist escaping his plain life. Bilbo has plenty of opportunities to stay by himself in Bag-End, Underhill. When Bilbo wakes up after the morning of the unexpected tea party, where he meets the thirteen dwarves and learns of Smaug the dragon, no one is around to force him to leave. He runs to meet the dwarves, without handkerchief or money, by his own free will. Bilbo gave in and his "Took side had won" (The Hobbit 24). The dwarves end up getting captured by the elves and are held prisoners. Being the daring creature Bilbo is, he breaks the dwarves out of bondage and sends them floating safely down river. Not thinking of himself, Bilbo has to drift in the water by his self with no outside protection. Bilbo does all of this on his own while Gandalf is not even around. The dwarves and Bilbo finally reach the Lonely Mountain, home of Smaug the dragon. Bilbo decides, by his own autonomy, to put the invisible ring on and venture farther into the sleeping den of Smaug. He tries to prove himself a burglar again and steals a golden cup. Smaug is outraged when Bilbo returns. They have a conversation and Bilbo accidentally lets it slip that the barrel-men of Lake-town helped him to reach Lonely Mountain. While Bilbo and his dwarf friends were traveling through Mirkwood they come across some very mean spiders. Bilbo, seeking an adventure, turns invisible with his magical ring and saves his dwarf friends' lives, almost getting himself killed in the process. That act showed bravery and courage in
