William Faulkner said "The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself." I agree with this statement because self conflict is the most difficult type of conflict to resolve; one has to be his/her own mediator while fighting two battles at the same time. Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night gives perfect examples of this through Mary Tyrone's conflict with being a morphine adict and a very unhappy wife. O'Neill uses irony to portray the disharmonic struggles she goes through.
Mary Tyrone is a mother of two and ironically a morphine addict as well. Her main disagreement takes place between her addiction and her desire to be a good mother and role model for her alcoholic sons, Jamie and Edmund. She is not able to give them the attention they need because of her obsession with morphine.
