Stress

Stress is the "wear and tear "our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing surroundings. No ones life is free of stress. Sometimes we are challenged by frustrations, losses, changes, and conflicts. It has physical and emotional effects on us and can affect the body with good or bad feelings. As a good influence, stress can help us to motivate to do something or just help us through the day. As a bad influence, it can result in distrust, anger, depression, or rejection, which can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, high blood pressure and sometimes death. In adjusting to different circumstances, stress can help or hurt us depending how we react to it.

Throughout my life, I have been challenged by frustrations, losses and changes. Pressure can lead to frustration. Being out of school for sixteen years and then returning and going to college, the pressure I put on myself to do well and receive the best grade I can, leads to this frustration. In 1983, the loss of my grandfather had put a stress over me. Anxiety and fear were the key factors. But in time, these factors faded away and my life had overcome with change. Small hassles of daily life are important sources of my stress. Mispl


acing my car keys, waking up late, children coming in late from school, or just being stuck in traffic can weigh on my mind and body. Also the environment in which we live (temperature, noise, humidity, etc...) can be sources of stress. These sources of stress do not appear to be as potent as other stressors but can contribute to our overall stress levels.

The circumstances that cause stress are called stressors. People respond differently to stress. What could be a stressor for somebody else might not be for me in the same situation. For example, I am very prepared for my psychology test and anticipate a good grade, and for a classmate who is unprepared for the test and anticipates a bad grade. She is feeling the stress whereas I am confident. This experience can lead her to motivate and study harder for the next test. So in the end, this stress had a positive effect on her. The birth of my three children, which are positive life events, can be stressful also. This requires stressful adjustments in the pattern of living. Positive stress is a source of stress that we are typically unaware of and is happening all the time.
