Meaning of Literature

Humans need to relate things in order to understand them. This is where metaphors come into play. Metaphors are used in our daily speech as an attempt to bring meaning and to identify with the world around us ("The Motive for Metaphor", Frye). Metaphors have fit comfortably into the English language as well as many other languages. Without metaphors, many people would have trouble grasping concepts, simple and complex; resulting would be chaos and confusion. Literature can also provide the reader with a different perspective on life and helps them see situations with an open mind. In the end, the meaning of literature remains in its ability for humans to connect and apply it to their own life which can spawn personal growth.

Perhaps the most important thing about literature is its ability to assist in finding one's self. Literature provides the reader with ideas and concepts which have the potential to shape and mould who they are as humans. According to Frye, "...literature belongs to the world man constructs, not to the world he sees;" The world man construct is rooted in his imagination where there is no limit to what can happen. Imagination assists people in discovering themselves because in there, they create what the
