Humans need to relate things in order to understand them. This is where metaphors come into play. Metaphors are used in our daily speech as an attempt to bring meaning and to identify with the world around us ("The Motive for Metaphor", Frye). Metaphors have fit comfortably into the English language as well as many other languages. Without metaphors, many people would have trouble grasping concepts, simple and complex; resulting would be chaos and confusion. However, metaphors are not the only means of understanding and recognizing these ideas. Over the centuries, people have discovered that there is more to literature than words on a piece of paper. Literature enables humans to probe deeper into the human psyche by providing them with an array of situations which humans can identify with and learn from. Children read books because they are told it will provide them with knowledge and make them wiser, both intellectually and spiritually. Literature maintains its integrity all over the world by constantly allowing the reader to plunge into a world which has no limits, constructed in the imagination. Literature furthers the reader's ability to understand human behaviour, relate to others, and it delivers a passageway for personal growth. Literature is the language of the mind directed to the soul. The reason literature has survived for thousands of years is because it has the gift of touching so many lives and inspiring so many people. Every book, poem, and play tells a story and takes the reader on a journey which in the end, teaches the reader a lesson which assists in their individual development.
