In the film Bicycle Thief directed by Vittorio De Sica portrayed objective realism through the use of the setting the film takes place in. Not on scene that De Sica shot was in a studio. Everything was filmed in the everyday streets of Rome. The story line of the film is very simple and without De Sica's technique of mise en scene, the film would not nearly as realistic or portray the emotion that the audience experiences. All of the events in the film appear to be reality and accidental. Furthermore, the workman's search of finding his bicycle brings in more added drama and feeling for the audience. Although, without the setting of the streets in Rome with everyday people walking around, the same emotions would not be experienced. The public shame that the father and son go through add to their tragic search throughout the streets and open-air markets. The boy accompanies his father throughout the whole film while following along at his side. When it starts to rain, the father and son search for shelter, which ends up being the side of a building and has little covering to hide under on the side. Specific scenes were used to create the right condition for the acting to seem real and so that certain things would standout to the audience but look like it was not done on purpose. With the actor blending into the authentic settings, the natural life as itself comes out and the possibility of a set disappears. The film took a very long time to prepare because De Sica had to prepare everything just like any other director would have to that shoots his film in a studio. Also, the certain camera angles used and lighting, made the perfect scenes that looked like they were real and natural. All of these purposely chosen camera position make it so that there is a perfect luminosity that makes it fully resemble truth throughout every scene.

Every detail in the film brings a bigger meaning that you realize at the time. Whether the son is in front of the father, next to him or behind him, De Sica is carefully showing the audience things which they at the time do not realize or notice.
