William Randolph Hearst was born on April 29, 1863, in San Francisco, California. He is the only child in his family. Hearst's father was a self-made multimillionaire in the mining industry. One day, Hearst's father asked him what he wanted to do. The young boy answered him and said he wanted to take over the San Francisco Examiner.
