A detailed Summary of Scarlett letter

In the novel, The scarlet letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester Prynne arrives at colony where she is accused of adultery due to a love affair with minister Dimmesdale. As a result of this affair is their daughter Pearl. She is sentenced to wear a scarlet letter, which symbolizes her sin. The Puritan society turns her into an outsider due to her sinful action. The characters actions, throughout the text, convey the themes of hypocrisy and the inherent viciousness of the human spirit.

One of the romantic elements that is used by Hawthorne, is the love between Hester Prynne and Mr. Dimmsdale. Knowing that their love is forbidden and looked down upon , they choose to follow their hearts and accepting the future consequences. The author acknowledges Hester's strength and bravery. She does not reveal her partner's identity and decides to take the blame upon herself. "Wondrous strength and generosity of a woman's heart !She will not speak!" (Pg48) Even though Hester is tortured by her feelings for Mr. Dimmsdale, she accepts and faces the consequences like a courage's woman. An important significance to Hester and a Physical reminder of her sin is Pearl. Who from the beginning is though of as the Devil's child. She receives harsh treatment for her mothers action and is not welcomed by anyone into the town. "Pearl was born an outcast of the infantile world. An imp of evil, emblem and product of sin" (Pg64).The adoption that Hawthorne is sending out, is the love that Hester and Mr.Dimmesdale had for each other creates a sin which the puritan society cannot accept. This is why Pearls feelings of rejection grows and is shown on the Puritan society .

Although it is not just the town to blame for their actions towards Hester, and young Pearl. There is one person that takes the lead for others actions. Governor Bellingham is one of the most Hypocritical characters. He himself has a sister that commits a crime of witch craft which should be look down by the puritan society, although he allows her to continue. Governor Bellingham is allowed to continue because of his position of power. De to his status, the town believes in him and are not able to think for themselves. " As the worshipful Governor says, momentous to thine own, in whose charge hers is. Exhort her to confess the truth! " He is viewed as a perfect person that has no flaws however because of this he is able to judge people of their wrong dongs.
