As a teacher, it is my responsibility to come up with new ideas and ways of learning to meet the needs of each and every one of my students. As of now, I would say that I would give the student who cannot sit still things to do. Also, I would like to say that I will be exciting and enthusiastic enough for the students to want to pay attention! I want them to want to listen to me, but I know I cannot change the world (even though I will continue to attempt it). xt 3 to 4 years, and then declines (Boyd & Pellegrini 110). After reading this, I just had to say to myself: "No duh." The article also says that ADHD is more prevalent today. In my opinion, it does not exist more today at all, but it is just diagnosed more often so that the child, or even more importantly, the parent has a reason as to why their child is a little more active than their peers, or has more problems paying attention. Nationwide prevalence estimates indicate that between 3% and 5% of all children meet the diagnostic criteria for the disorder, and that youngsters with the disorder comprise one third to one half of all referrals to child mental health facilities (Hoza et. al. 483). I must say that labeling the child who appears to be shy, slow, and in their own world with ADHD is a new concept to me. After all, I always thought of the stereotypical boy who cannot sit still and does not pay attention. But, isn't "hyperactivity disorder" the complete opposite of the shy child who is often sluggish and in their own world? Upon hearing this, I immediately thought of myself because my biggest hurdle always was, and still is, paying attention. I can garuntee that three-quarters of my entire schooling career has been spent daydreaming in class and completing assignments at home. I was always pretty shy, and often felt stupid when the teacher called on me and I did not know the answer because I hadn't been paying attention. Now, according to this article, I could have been labeled with Attention Deficit too! Maybe I daydream more than most, but I know all of us drift into our own worlds from time to time, so, in theory, we could all just be diagnosed and then we would all have an excuse to fall asleep or get up and walk around during class. In perspective, I don't even see this as a real "disorder" at all. We often do not consider the possibility that the child could just be bored by the curriculum. I am more than willing to bet that they could possibly even be the "gifted" children who just have not found their style of learning yet.
