"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost begins with admiration of the beautiful and tranquil woods. As the poems continues, it becomes clear that it is man, traveler on a horse drawn carriage stopping to see the beautiful woods. As the poem goes on there is a major change and the poem goes from calm and pleasant to rushed and ick. The man says that he must go because he had duties and obligations to do before he can rest. The second poem is "The Elk" by Hugh McNamar. At the start of a poem, a family enters their cabin to find that it has recently been used. The place is trashed with cans in corners and the fence has been vandalized. The family goes out to the back porch to find a dead animal hanging, twisting from a rafter. This animal has not been bled not gutted and the family is upset and disgusted. There is an overall creepy feeling. When the family returns later in the summer and in their inability to sleep, they hear the creaking of the Elk on the rafter. This poem makes the reader feel disconcerted and creepy. Two poems, the first, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", calm serene, someplace you want to be; in sharp contrast to the second, "The Elk" which is spooky, haunted, the kind
"The Elk" give the reader a completely different group of images, feelings, and ideas. The poem is very bold from the beginning. It is distressing and disturbing to the reader to read how the poachers have left their "empty beer and spaghetti cans in the corner" and use of fence posts to feed the fire. The fact that the poachers were so close when the family arrives makes it even spookier. The poachers were so close that if they had gone out the front they would have been spotted. The reader can see these disgusting men slipping out the back door and imagine them looking loningly ath the elk that the family is deeply disturbed by. The family goes out to see this recently dead animal. The use of the words "gutted" and "bled" add to the violence of the death of this poor animal who was just out to see the snow. The fact that this family goes back in the summer to escape the city sounds and have a relaxing evening and cannot sleep as a result of the creaking ropes allows the reader so once again see the dead elk swinging, creaking on a rafter the porch. of poem that sends chills up your spine. These two poems well written yet have completely different tones. "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" has a calm, serene tranquil feeling through most of the poem until it is interrupted by the reality of life. "The Elk" is a bold, all to real, creepy poem from beginning to end.
