A Midsummer Nights Dream
In the play A Midsummer Night's Dream love was a main concept. However, in order for the emotions of love to take their place, there is a need of power to generate it. Only through power is love really made evident. The power of authority, the power to transform perceptions and the power of infatuation and romantic desire all contribute to the theme of love. Almost every character possessed a unique power that led way for much desire. Authority, magic, and complete emotion all were driving forces in contributing to the role of power. Power was not only exemplified through authority, but was shown in many different aspects. Here we will take a look at the authoritative aspects along with the powers of perception and desire. The concept of authoritative power was surfaced quite early in the play. From here we were introduced to the relationship between Thesius and Hippolyta. In the play, the supreme ruler of Athens, Thesius ends up marring Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. However, during the whole play, Hippolyta never throughly discusses her feeling and ideas about her recent marriage. She acts as if she had no choice but to marry Thesius. This is where, by examining Hippolyta's position in the relationship, we see t
The more you beat me, I will fawn on you: A second example of how the fairies possess power to transform perceptions was again through the love-juice potion. In this case, the fairies had stumbled upon a sleeping Demetrius. Demetrius who was deep within the enchanted woods, had not been able to find Hermia and his rival Lysander and fatigued his fruitless search. This is where Oberon observed him in his deep sleep. Oberon had learnt by some questions he asked Puck (a fellow Fairy), that he had applied the love-charm to the wrong persons eyes (lysander). Now having found the person first intended, he touched the eyelids of the sleeping Demetrius with the love-juice and he instantly awoke. Upon awakening, the first thing he saw was Helena, resulting in Demetrius spreading his love to her, through love speech and emotion. Demetrius, who thought he was in love with Hermia, now had lasting emotion toward Helena, who was also now loved by Lysander. The transformation of perception had led to the intermingling and intertwining of the lovers emotions and created a stir in their relationships and friendships. The irresponsibility of the fairies and their special powers opened way for turmoil within the lover quarrels. Love was played and bounced through many hearts. Power is the main basis for love within the play. Shakespeare uses many instances of power to help convey his massages of love. The fairies, Hermia and Lysander, Egeus, and Helena all possess different forms of power whether it be through authority, perception or desire. These powers develop conflict and tension within the play and add excitement and drama within. Without the concept of power, the play would have never have been able to gain the status it has today. Power adds direction to the lovers conflicts and passages. Not only was the power distributed through authority, but it was also distributed through the power of transforming perceptions of love. Only the fairies possess such a abilty of power through their magic. After escaping to the woods, Lysander had gained fatigue and decided to rest. During this rest, Lysander had been approached by Oberon, the King of the Fairies. Love-juice was spilt from a little purple flower on Lysanders eyes from the hands of Oberon which would completely change his perception of love. This perception changing drug was such a powerful love charm, all of Lysanders love for Hermia vanished away, and he had a sudden deep love for Helena. Upon the awakening of Lysander he immediately started addressing Helena in terms of extravagant love
