A Spell For Chameleon is a very good book. The main characters are Bink, Trent, Chameleon, Iris, Sabrina, and the Good Magician Humfrey. Bink and Sabrina are very close friends that live in the North Village. Humfrey is a magician of information who lives to the south of the Gap Chasm. This story takes place in the kingdom of Xanth. Xanth was the enchanted land where magic ruled-where every citizen had a special spell only he could cast. It was a land of centaurs and dragons and basilisks.

The book begins with Bink talking to his girlfriend Sabrina about the situation he's in. The problem that Bink was facing is that he had no magic. The rule was that unless every citizen of Xanth had discovered their magic by age twenty-five, they would be exiled forever. Bink's twenty-fifth birthday was barely a month away. When Sabrina suggested that he go to see the Good Magician Humfrey, he decided to go. A few days later, he set off in search of the Magician Humfrey's castle.

When he refused, Trent locked him in a pit with another person who also refused to help him. Her name was Fanchon. She was very smart and soon got both of them out of there. They stole a ship and headed out to sea. Trent soon caught up with them. Suddenly, a whirlpool appeared that sucked Trent, Bink, and Fanchon down and under the shield.

He continued his journey, but on the wrong side of the Chasm. He traveled along side it and tried to go around it. When he got to the end of it, the ground disappeared and he fell into water. The next thing he knew, he was on the Sorceress Iris's island. She fed him and took care of him. But when Bink realized that she wanted his help in taking over Xanth, he left.

He shamefully returned home. Having no magical talent to show to the king, he was exiled from Xanth. He immediately set out for the Isthmus to cross over to the Mundane world. When he arrived, he crossed through the shield that protected Xanth from the Mundane world, never to return.
