A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams, is a involved web of complex themes where characters are pitted against one another as symbols of conflicting qualities. Throughout the story there are many themes. One theme that resurfaces many times during the play in how money affects the relationships among the characters. Money affects relationships by creating conflicts between people who have it and who do not, as well as creating conflicts among people who have different beliefs on how it should be used. Class conflict and gambling are two ways that money affects characters in the story. Tennessee Williams uses money to illustrate a conflict between two main characters. Blanche and Stanley are at odds with one another from the beginning of the story. Money is used to stimulate conflict throughout the story. First, money increases the individual conflicts between Blanche and Stanley. Second, money is used to examine the class conflict that Blanche and Stanley represent. The gambling of money present in A streetcar named Desire also seems to be symbolic of many of the prevailing attitudes apparent during that period of American society. One conflict of the time period in which this play takes place that seemed to surface very frequently is societies view on women. The opportunity to gamble seems to show two main relationships women had with men at the time. The first is a woman's lack of opportunity and equality compared to men. The second is how women were often viewed as only sexual items. Women are often excluded from this man's activity including Mitch's sick mother. When asked to host a poker night at his place of residence he answers "No-not at my place. My mother is still sick!" (2080). The fact that he doesn't want to bring a poker night to his mother's place is indicative of the fact that gambling is something primal and base that mothers should not be exposed to. This is seen when Blanche and Stanley were talking about how Stanley found an interest in women who "Lay...her cards on the table." (2085). The sexual innuendo that takes places seems to suggest that the "something" primal and base is sex.
